Check That Your Hauler Is Permitted

Nassau County Ordinance 96-12 requires any hauler collecting residential or commercial waste in the unincorporated areas of the county to hold a non-exclusive solid waste hauler permit. It is not optional and it is not a formality.

When Callahan opened commercial collection to the open market, the county was explicit: businesses can choose their hauler, but that hauler must hold a Nassau County solid waste permit.

Plenty of companies advertise service in Nassau. Fewer hold the permit. It is worth asking before you sign, and worth asking your current hauler if you are already under contract — you can verify with the Nassau County Solid Waste Department at (904) 530-6700.

Where Your Waste Goes

Nassau County operates the Solid Waste Management Facility at 46026 Landfill Road in Callahan. It handles most non-hazardous material and runs on a scale — loads are weighed in and out, and disposal is billed by tonnage.

The county’s Convenience Recycling Center at the same address is residential only, and it does not take yard waste or construction and demolition debris. Those loads go to Sandhill Recycle Center on CR-108 in Yulee, which charges separately.

For a business, this is exactly the kind of thing your hauler should be handling. Your invoice from us includes disposal. You should not be sorting out which facility takes what.
